About Ben Askren
Player Biography

Ben Askren, born July 18, 1984, in Hartland, Wisconsin, is one of the most accomplished wrestlers and grapplers ever to transition into mixed martial arts. Known for his unconventional “funk” wrestling style, elite grappling IQ, and undefeated championship runs in multiple MMA organizations, Askren built a legacy defined by technical mastery, relentless pressure, and a personality that made him one of the sport’s most entertaining figures.

Askren’s athletic journey began in Wisconsin, where he developed into one of the top high school wrestlers in the United States. His success earned him a place at the University of Missouri, where he became a collegiate legend. Askren won two NCAA Division I Championships, finished as a four-time NCAA All-American, and dominated opponents with a unique scrambling-heavy approach that confused traditional wrestlers. His career achievements earned him a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team, where he represented his country in Beijing. Although he did not medal, his Olympic experience helped set the stage for his eventual transition into MMA.

Askren turned professional in mixed martial arts in 2009, signing with Bellator MMA. From the start, he displayed the same dominance that defined his wrestling career. Using relentless takedowns, positional control, and suffocating pressure, Askren won the Bellator Season 2 Welterweight Tournament and soon became the Bellator Welterweight Champion. He defended his title multiple times, remaining undefeated and showcasing a level of grappling superiority seldom seen in the sport. Critics often described his style as smothering, but his ability to neutralize opponents and dictate every aspect of a fight was undeniable.

In 2014, Askren signed with ONE Championship, becoming the promotion’s Welterweight World Champion. He continued his undefeated streak, dismantling opponents with ease and solidifying himself as one of the best welterweights outside the UFC. His time in Asia further elevated his profile, as fans admired his dominance and outspoken personality.

A historic trade between promotions in late 2018 finally brought Askren to the UFC, one of the most highly anticipated signings in MMA history. He made his UFC debut in 2019 against Robbie Lawler, securing a controversial submission victory that immediately made headlines. Later that year, Askren faced Jorge Masvidal in a fight that produced the fastest knockout in UFC history. Although the moment overshadowed his earlier successes, Askren handled the loss with humor and humility, further endearing him to fans.

Askren fought once more, facing grappling specialist Demian Maia, before retiring from MMA in 2020 due to hip issues. In 2021, he briefly came out of retirement for a high-profile boxing match against Jake Paul, a spectacle that extended his fame beyond traditional combat sports.

Outside the cage, Askren is known for his intelligence, charisma, and love for wrestling. He runs successful wrestling academies, trains young athletes, and appears frequently on podcasts and sports media. His outspoken personality, sharp wit, and candid approach have made him a respected and influential voice in the combat sports community.

Today, Ben Askren stands as a unique figure in MMA history — an Olympic-level wrestler, undefeated multi-organization champion, and one of the most recognizable personalities in the sport. His legacy is defined not only by victories, but by innovation, authenticity, and his lasting impact on grappling and mixed martial arts.
